Hurricane Dorian Damage in Nova Scotia| Maritimes, Day 5

9/8/19 - Sunday
After fueling up at breakfast, we began our drive into Nova Scotia.
We didn't know what the state of the province would be, but we'd watched the morning news and it had been reported that over 350,000 Nova Scotian customers were without power. There were about 50,000 in New Brunswick and 35,000 in PEI. The weather looked clear, but it was chilly and windy. We weren't sure how far we'd actually be able to drive, so we just started driving into NS and surveying the hurricane damage we passed.
As we passed through more and more towns with no electricity, Francisco started getting very worried about gas. We still had about 3/4 of a tank, but to get all the way to Halifax and back would use a fair amount. We decided to go as far as Truro and see if any gas stations had power. We were in luck, so we filled up and continued on to the coast!
We'd been scanning through Instagram to see which restaurants had electricity and were open. Don't worry; there was still poutine available and Smoke's Poutinerie was our first official stop in the city! This is a chain restaurant that I'm pretty sure we've been to before, and I love that they have a standard vegetarian option available.

Conveniently, Johnny K's Authentic Donair was just a short walk away, so we decided to also try our first donair.  The thin, Lebanese-style pita is topped with tomatoes and raw onions. The donair sauce is a sweet blend of evaporated milk, vinegar, garlic powder and sugar, and the sandwich is wrapped in tinfoil.

We walked over to Halifax Harbour and popped a squat here to eat this messy food reminiscent of a gyro.
The Harbour was a fun area to walk around.

We stopped in at the Sugah Confectionery & Ice Cream Emporium and grabbed some ice cream to enjoy on the water.

We checked out what hotels were available and had power and ended up finding the best deal back in Truro, an hour away. This was our first time staying at just a Holiday Inn (not a Holiday Inn Express). The biggest difference we could find was the standard hotel doesn't include breakfast, so Francisco definitely had an Express preference.
