Pizzanati: Mellow Mushroom

I'm not sure that Mellow Mushroom should really qualify for a feature in Pizzanati because it is not a local chain, but my blog, my rules, right?  Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers was established in Atlanta, Georgia in 1974, and it now operates as a restaurant franchise with over 150 locations throughout the US. There are three locations nearby. We first visited the location up near West Chester. When they opened one in Hyde Park, that became our most visited location.  There is also one in Wilder, Kentucky that we have not been to yet.

Out of all the pizza places around town, we've probably visited Mellow Mushroom the most. Francisco is a HUGE fan, and it's one of the few pizza places we actually tend to go to for dine-in vs. carry-out.  Our go-to order is the Holy Shiitake Pie, which features an olive oil and garlic base, Shiitake, button, and Portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions, mozzarella, and MontAmore cheeses. It's drizzled with garlic aioli and black truffle oil and garnished with fresh chives and shaved Parmesan [$13.95 for a small]. This is probably the most complex flavor we seek out in a pizza, and it is definitely extremely flavorful. The crust is also unique; it's made with whole wheat-blend flour and is tossed thin before topping.  It's a bit chewy, and my only problem is that that leads to it not reheating well.
Holy Shiitake Pie
Despite the number of times we've visited this restaurant, we'd never had just a "normal" pizza, so we decided it was time to order a basic cheese and mushroom pizza [$8.95 for a small + $1.50 per topping]. With a BOGO offer, the timing couldn't have been more perfect.  And it was good - not Holy Shiitake good, but definitely a solid choice for pizza. Francisco thought it had a bit too much sauce, but I thought it was fine.
I think part of what keeps Francisco coming back time and again is dat beer cheese doe. He loves it, and we usually get a side of it with our order [$2.45]. It has a nice consistency with a strong beer cheese flavor that isn't overwhelming.

Verdict: Francisco thinks this is the best pizza he's had in Cincinnati, and without question, it's the pizza place we've come back to the most.  10/10. This is a solid option for unique, flavorful pizza as well as more traditional pizza. Their full menu boasts appetizers, hoagies, salads, mixed drinks, and vegan options - so it's a fantastic option for everyone!
