Red River Gorge on Derby Day

We decided to venture out for a little day trip last weekend. We've barely left Cincinnati all year (excluding our quick jaunt to Antarctica), so we were overdue for some kind of outing, even if it was just a couple hours drive further south into Kentucky.

Per our "southern road trip tradition", we stopped at Reality Tuesday for brekkie. I'm still bummed about not being able to drink coffee, but we consoled ourselves with a blueberry-pomegranate smoothie, a banana nut muffin, a Derby Pie (cuz' it was Derby Day!!), and an egg sandwich.
Arriving at Red River Gorge, our desired starting location was overcrowded, so we started at Lakeside Trail, which intersects with many other trails.
Our first destination was Natural Bridge, which was pretty striking. My husband was even like, wow, I didn't expect it to be this cool.
It was a tight squeeze up to the top of the bridge, and the scenery on top was spectacular.
We walked over to Lookout Point for the opposing view.
We then hiked over to Lover's Leap.
While not on our original itinerary, we made a detour to Devil's Gulch, which was this steep, slippery staircase.
Next we headed over to another trail to hike out to Rock Bridge Arch.
We were able to cross over the top of the waterfall and walk down and around.
We attempted to stop in Lexington for dinner, but the restaurant we stopped at was closing up shop because of the Derby, so we ended up eating at Fazoli's instead. :-P And grabbing a milkshake at Chick-Fil-A.
Since we spent Derby Day in Kentucky, but missed the actual derby, we made up for it with Mint Juleps on Sunday.
And a smorgasbord of Chipotle and J. Gumbo's. :)
