Buckeyes and Acorns
Ohio is known as the "buckeye state", nicknamed after its state tree, the Ohio Buckeye. The nuts that this tree bears resemble the eye of a deer as you can see in the photo below.
But perhaps most important are buckeye candies, which were named for their resemblance to the nut of the Ohio buckeye tree. And this yummy peanut butter mixture partially dipped in chocolate is very well-known in Ohio - if we had an official state candy, this would be it!
If you have not had the privilege of trying this candy yet, here is a quick picture of some delicious ice cream we recently picked up, Velvet Buckeye Classic, that features a picture of the candy on the front of the package.
But how about a delicious fall twist on this Ohio classic? Acorn buckeyes!
CHOCOLATE-PEANUT BUTTER ACORNS
And voila, acorn-shaped buckeyes! Let me tell you, these were delicious! The pretzel stick makes them perfect to grab, and ours came out to about 100 calories per acorn. Perfect snack!

CHOCOLATE-PEANUT BUTTER ACORNS
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups confectioners' sugar
- 6 ounces good-quality semisweet chocolate
- 36 branch-shaped pieces from mini pretzels
Directions
-
Stir together peanut butter and butter in a bowl with a wooden spoon. Add sugar; work into a smooth dough with your hands. Refrigerate 30 minutes.
-
Using the palms of your hands, roll dough into 1 1/2-inch oblong "acorns" (you should have 36), flatten 1 end of each a bit with your fingertip, and place on a waxed paper-lined rimmed baking sheet. Refrigerate 30 minutes.
First, we rolled these into roughly equal size balls, then attempted to form acorn shapes. -
Meanwhile, melt chocolate in a bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water. Working with 1 acorn at a time, insert a toothpick into rounded tip, dip flat end into chocolate, then return to baking sheet. Remove toothpick, and insert a pretzel piece into the chocolate-dipped end of each acorn. Refrigerate until chocolate is set, about 2 hours.
